With only a couple of days before Akim and Marisha blast off to Bali, we are getting ready for our fundraiser tonight. We are hoping that the fundraiser will provide us with various equipment for recording the trip as well as funds for stage and costume design. A little bit can go a long way, and the paypal link below is open and ready to receive donations!
This explains the purpose behind our journey:
Akim Funk Buddha & the Star Fleet will be embarking on a journey to Bali, Indonesia and Rajasthan, India. Akim Funk Buddha will be accompanied by dance company members AkiKo Tokuoka, Elizabeth Bueno, Marisha Francoise, and Samara Cohen, as well as costume designer Natasha Wozniak and set designer Jun Ishida. We have been invited to take part in the Bali Spirit Festival April 27 to May 3rd, however the focus of the trip will include intensive work on our new project: Kinesthetic International Dialogue.
K.I.D. aims to create borderless performance art worldwide. We will begin our urban theatrical odyssey in Bali, Indonesia and continue on to Rajasthan, India. We are going on these trips to explore the ethereal mantis-like movements of the Balinese dance threaded with the urban dance styles of the fluid Cobra, the Robot, punctuated by body popping. Upon finding these connecting threads, we will not only observe but also participate. We will perform in village markets, schools, orphanages, as well as exchange dance workshops with our international friends. Upon our return to New York we will continue providing workshops, especially to children, sharing the traditional dances we learn from our Balinese and Indian friends. From performing in a small village in India to performing on Wall Street, or even in homes and workplaces, we want to spark the intrinsic state of us all, genuine curiosity.
